A few weeks ago, I got published. Hidden Scars (Aliker P’Ocitti) is my first book compilation of poetry written over the last 18 months of Covid19 Lockdown.
It is now being marketed and distributed by internationally reputable retail bookstores; Amazon, Barnes and Noble and my publishers Xlibris, in New York, USA respectively.
Last week, on my Facebook post (now Meta), I asked for reviews and a friend asked: How can I write a book review?
A few inspiring friends instantly visited my publisher’s website (Xlibris) and poured their hearts out about how they feel; others even after reading only the synopsis of the book.
In this post, I share with you how to write a book review. Book reviews help recommend new reads for every book loving reader and offers feedback to the writer.
The first step in writing a book review is to summarise without giving details what the book is about. Introduce the book concept and the play of major characters in the book without having to state the plot twists and turns of the book.
Secondly, evaluate the book for LIKES and DISLIKES. Focus your thoughts on how the story was told and how it made you feel.
Address yourself by writing, why an idea worked or didn’t work for you.
Take note of the Author’s writing style, use of emotions, editing and use of pictures etc. Feel free to give an overview of your impression of the book.
Then, summarise your thoughts on the book and suggest who you recommend the book to. Through your recommendation help others discover their next read.
Last but not the least, give the book a rating. For instance, out of Five Stars with Five being the highest mark, offer your verdict of the book for the writer and other intending readers.
Conclusively, book reviews are all about evaluating a book and offering feedback.
Now that you know how to write a book review, practice makes perfect. Go write me a book review NOW and offer me a rating on any of these bookstore websites.
